Kazakhstan Pipeline Automation Reverse Trade Mission – During this mission, EMG will organize activities for a Kazakh delegation from the nation’s Ministry of Oil & Gas, KazTransGas, and KazTransOil. While in the U.S. EMG will arrange for the delegation to meet with U.S. firms offering pipeline automation, compressor station automation, and pipeline security solutions, and to visit pipeline control centers, facilities, and operators.

Latin America and the Caribbean Region: Solar Energy Projects – EMG is implementing a Definitional Mission to evaluate two specific solar generation projects in El Salvador and Guatemala. Also, EMG is completing the mission with a full country profile and identification of two solar projects in Colombia.

Mexico Renewable Energy Project – EMG is completing a project to identify, evaluate, and recommend projects in Mexico’s renewable energy sector including: wind, waste-to-energy, biomass, and cross-border interconnectivity.

MENA Power Forum – EMG was hired to serve as the technical contractor for USTDA’s Middle East & North Africa Power Forum 2010, which was held in Cairo in May 2010. EMG’s work included meeting key stakeholders and assessing the power sector portfolios of MENA countries, culminating in the identification of 32 mega-projects slated for the region.

Pakistan Energy Sector Projects – EMG completed a Definitional Mission to identity, evaluate, and recommend projects in Pakistan’s energy sector for USTDA funding consideration. The project identified 172 candidate projects, recommended 15 to USTDA, and drew up Terms of Reference for technical assistance and feasibility studies of 8 projects.

Turkey Definitional Mission – In January 2009, Energy Markets Group led a USTDA Assessment Mission to Turkey to identify potential U.S. energy assistance projects in advance of President Obama’s visit in February. The EMG team consisted of experts in energy planning, coal and gas fired power generation, renewable energy, and energy efficiency. EMG prepared an overview of the Turkish energy sector, described the country’s energy policy situation, and provided detailed information on Turkey’s energy resource balance, including current production, consumption and trade, and updated projections on future growth in demand.

Definitional Mission to Investigate Potential Alternative Energy Sector Opportunities in Indonesia – EMG completed a Definitional Mission to Indonesia to identify alternative energy supply projects for Indonesia. The EMG Team identified 21 alternative projects that would benefit from USTDA support: 7 of these were biodiesel or other biofuel projects, 9 were geothermal projects, 3 were coal bed methane, 1 was coal gasification, and the last involved use of micro-turbine gas generators. Four of these projects, including one on biodiesel production, one on palm oil waste to energy, one on coal bed methane, and one on geothermal power production, were recommended for support by USTDA.

Independent Power Project (IPP) Feasibility Study – This IPP activity focused on the utilization of gas power generation in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region. This project was undertaken for Owel Holdings Limited – Lagos, Nigeria.

Ethiopia Tendaho Geothermal Power Project Feasibility Study – This project was carried out for the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCO) – Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for the purpose of enabling EEPCO to plan, finance, and install a 5-megawatt (MW) pilot geothermal plant in the country’s Tendaho geothermal field.

Iraqi Oil Training Program (IOTP) Human Resources – This two-year capacity-building activity focused on developing the Iraqi Ministry of Oil’s human resource management and development systems, seeking to place the Ministry on the long-term path to a world-class workforce.

Evaluation of a Biofuels Project – EMG completed a due diligence desk study on a private sector sweet sorghum-to-ethanol project in Indonesia, examining the technical, financial, and regulatory aspects of the proposed project.

Workshops – EMG regularly conducts workshops in collaboration with government agencies, multilateral lending institutions, and donors. Below is a listing of some of EMG’s workshops:

    • East Africa Power Pool (EAPP), in Nairobi, Kenya
